Without promotion you have no chance to make yourself heard. As with many other things in life it gets easier in time. The work is harder at the beginning but you can leverage it later. Also money helps a lot. Having money cuts a lot of corners and saves a lot of time. I personally love the viral campaigns. You get a great feeling when it works even better than you expected.
